DeLorme has just unveiled their Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator which is touted to be ready to hit the market sometime next month.  Just what is the Earthmate PN-60w all about? Well, it is touted to be the first first handheld GPS in the world that enables Type & Send text messaging via satellite. Yup, that’s right – it relies on satellite technology to get your messages across, which means you are no longer subject to having to look out for a decent cellphone signal in rural areas. There will be a special interface on the PN-60w that helps it connect wirelessly with the SPOT Satellite Communicator, where the latter was designed exclusively for DeLorme.

All messages are created using the PN-60w’s internal keyboard, which will then be relayed via satellite for delivery using established SPOT technology.

The PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator works great in keeping users reliably connected even if they are somewhere remote, regardless of country worldwide. Both devices were specially designed to be ruggedized and waterproof, making it more suitable than your regular cellphone when it comes to being subjected to the rigors of outdoor use.

With the DeLorme Earthmate PN-60w with SPOT Satellite Communicator, you can type and send text messages to individual email addresses, cellphones, buddy lists, and social networking sites including (but not limited to) Twitter, Facebook, Fire Eagle, SpotAdventures.com, or Geocaching.com.
