HandTalk is a prototype gadget intended to help improve the communication process with the deaf. It was presented at the Meeting of The Minds Expo at Carnegie Mellon University Center.
The idea came from the fact that not all people are fluent with the use of sign language. So, to help the disabled with their interpersonal communication, creators of HandTalk worked on the project.
The device is a glove which is able to detect motion and gestures used in the sign language. It then translates the motion into an audio. The translated motion can either be played through a cell phone or any other mobile device. Creators equipped the HandTalk with Gesture Recognition Platform, a platform intended for deaf. They also loaded the said platform with special mobile software that can perceive 32 words so far. Since the project is still on its developmental stage, further progress can be expected.
