Smart Contact Lenses have a smart way of protecting the eyes

Basically, contact lenses are used to help a person with his/her vision. Some prefer to wear contact lenses instead of eyeglasses. Now, contact lenses are not just for aiding vision. They may also be used for eye check-up.
You read it right. That is the new function delivered by the pair of Smart Contact Lenses. The Smart Contact Lenses have the ability to measure the pressure within the eye and immediately dispense medication accordingly. This could be made possible with the use of the material developed by the biomedical engineers at UC Davis School of Medicine. They started with the material called polydimethylsiloxane or PDMS. The engineers developed a way of placing powdered silver which has antimicrobial properties on the PDMS and shaped it into a contact lens shape so it could act like a pressure sensor in the eye.
If it becomes successful, it could be used to prevent and treat Glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition that can lead to blindness. It is caused by the uneven build-up of pressure in the eyes. The reading made by the smart contact lenses would be relayed on a computer where it could be analyzed by specialists. Presently, researchers and developers of the smart contact lenses are making ways to seek approval for trials and tests.
